A Visit from the Jabberwock

I was thinking about uploading this on December 24th, but it really doesn’t have all that much to do with Christmas.

’Twas the night before Christmas, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
The stockings were hung by the borogoves,
And the children outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
His eyes — how they twinkle! His dimples: how merry!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
His cheeks like roses; his nose like a cherry.”

He took his vorpal sword in hand;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth.
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
Which then in a twinkling, I heard on the roof.

One, two! One, two! and through and through
More rapid than eagles the coursers they came,
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
And he whistled, and shouted, and call’d them by name.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?”
I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
